Chapter Six

“Good morning, recruits! My name is Samael, and I’m your VR trainer.” The Guardian Angel beamed as he introduced himself. “I bet you’re all excited to get started!”

Hell yes, they were!

Every older student they asked had said that the VR training was the most fun part of the program. It had been the number one topic among them for weeks now. Even though Ms. Williams had explained to them what virtual reality was and how it worked, most of them still couldn’t really wrap their heads around it.

They couldn’t remember it, of course, but they had all spent the first years of their lives in a rather archaic environment. None of them even could imagine what TV was before they had been brought here, let alone something so complex as VR.

Gradually, they’d been allowed to watch movies and consume other forms of modern entertainment. After all, they were supposed to function like normal Olympias citizens once they graduated from Angelborn. It was important to introduce them to all kinds of culture and pop culture.

The neural implants every one of them got inserted in their brains were not only used to wipe their memories and enhance their cognitive abilities, but they also offered VR access. However, until today, this function had not been unlocked.

Ordinary kids of their ages would have shown excitement after Samael’s introduction, but Nephilim and the others had been trained to keep their cool and composure. Standing still in two rows, dressed in black, they appeared more like miniature soldiers than school children – or rather, miniature Guardian Angels.

Instead of having their normal physical training with Nathanael and Bezaliel, they had been led to the third building in the inner compound of Angelborn. Not as huge as the main building and the gym, it was still an impressive structure with black walls and no windows. The VR Training Center had a dozen rooms equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and a huge server farm in the basement. Naturally, what was carried out here couldn’t be run on regular servers in Olympias. Like everything at Angelborn, the VR training was handled secretively.

Nephilim and her fellow classmates stood in a spacious, windowless room with black walls and bluish illumination. It didn’t have any normal furniture inside. Instead, fifteen containers stood in rows of five, each big enough for a grown man to fit inside. They were black and looked a bit like high-tech sarcophagi. Blue lights shone through the open lids.

The view gave Nephilim the creeps. She couldn’t help it. Somehow it felt eerie, unnatural. She gritted her teeth and stood still, trying not to show that she was feeling uneasy.

Fear is dangerous because it clouds your thinking. Never let fear take over your mind.

That was one of the first lessons Bezaliel had given them. Since day one, they had learned techniques on how to suppress fear, and the neural implants were designed to help with that.

Fear leads to a loss of focus and hasty decisions. Fear gets you killed.

“I assume
